چکیده
The field of infectious diseases is enjoying a renaissance in professional and popular media. This interst derives primarily from three concerns: bioterrorism, antibiotic resistance, and emerging infectious diseases. In this article we only discuss the last of these; however, it is important to recognize that the public health infrastructure required to address each is similar. The 1999 outbreak of West Nile virus infections in New York City captured attention beyond its immediate clinical significance because it exposed U.S. vulnerability to exotic infectious agents and demonstrated the importance of investment in public health systems and methods for rapid characterization of and response to novel agents. West Nile virus is amember of the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex within the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus (10,34). Other pathogens within this complex include Alfuy, Cacipacore, Koutango, Japan-

Introduction: West Nile virus is an RNA virus that was first isolated in a patient in the West Nile province of Uganda 1937 and has since than spread to the Middle East, Europe, and found its way to the United States in 1999 when the first case of West Nile Virus was reported in Queens, NY. From 1999 to 2008, there have been a total of about 29,000 cases of which about 12,000 had neuroinvasive ...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of West Nile virus from the blood of viremic patients during the 2000 outbreak in Israel.
We report the isolation of West Nile (WN) virus from four patient serum samples submitted for diagnosis during an outbreak of WN fever in Israel in 2000. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed two lineages, one closely related to a 1999 New York isolate and the other to a 1999 Russian isolate.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borneagent that is maintained within a bird-mosquito cycle. In humansand equids, infection by this agent is usually asymptomatic, orcharacterized by a mild febrile illness. However, fatal meningoencephalitisor encephalitis may occur. OBJECTIVES:The aim ofthis study was to evaluate the prevalence of WNVinfection andcorrelation of this organism with h...
متن کاملStructural proteins of West Nile virus are a major determinant of infectious particle production and fitness in astrocytes
The molecular basis for the increased resistance of astrocytes to a non-neuropathogenic strain of West Nile virus (WNV), WNV-MAD78, compared with the neuropathogenic strain WNV-NY remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that the reduced susceptibility of astrocytes to WNV-MAD78 is due to a combination of both cellular activities as well as viral determinants. Analyses of the viral particle indic...
